Udk 619:612.014.46:636.5 the Effect of Selenium on Phenyl Mercury Toxicity and Mercury Retention in Chicken

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Phenylmercuric chloride in a dose 30 ppm of mercury alone and the same dose supplemented with 4 ppm of selenium were fed to chickens of both sexes for 8 weeks. Body weight, mortality rate, pathological changes and the level of mercury in the muscle, liver, and kidneys of the laying hens and cocks were analysed. After the dosage period, the mean body weight of the hens was unaffected, while in the group of cocks fed 30 ppm Hg without selenium addition, a decrease occured. In the group with Se addition no significant change in body weight of either sex was observed. Differences in the affinity of some organs to bind Hg were observed. Moreover, supplementation with 4 ppm of selenium resulted in significantly increased mercury levels in the organs analysed. The highest increase was found in the liver, but there was the same increasing tendency in the muscle and kidneys.

Interaction between selenium and inorganic mercury.

Data on mercury and selenium interaction in the mammalian body are reviewed. Experimental data from studies on rats show that selenium interacts with mercury metabolism and toxicity after exposure to mercuric mercury. Autopsy data from workers exposed to mercury vapor indicate an association between mercury and selenium retention in the central nervous system, suggesting the formation of a merc...

Ecological aspects of mercury--selenium interactions in the marine environment.

In the marine environment, mercury is accompanied by selenium in all investigated species of mammals, birds, and fish--possibly due to a normal homeostatic regulation. It therefore seems likely that selenium will exert its protective action against mercury toxicity in the marine environment, decreasing its detrimental effects on reproduction, behavior, growth, etc. of the organisms and thus pro...

Mercury Intoxication in Rats: Iron and Vitamin B6 as A Potential Therapy

Background: Mercury in any form is poisonous and mercury toxicity most commonly affects the nervous, gastrointestinal (GI) and urinary systems. The aim of this study was to investigate the specific effect associated with mercury toxicity and to evaluate the effectiveness of iron and vitamin B6 supplement on mercury-induced toxicities in rats. Methods: This experiment was performed on 25 rats...

Mercury toxicity

Mercury is a metal found in elemental, organic, and inorganic forms in the nature. This substance is present in the composition of earth crust, soil, air, and even in some tissues of plants and sea animals. Each year nearly 3400 tons of mercury compounds are released in the environment, which 95% settle in the soil, 3% in the oceans, and 2% in the atmosphere. Different industrial products li...

Effects of mercury on embryonic development and larval growth of the sea urchin Echinometra mathaei from the Persian Gulf

This study investigated the effects of increasing mercury (Hg) concentration on early developmental stages of sea urchin, Echinomethra mathaei, as a bioindicator. The toxicity test was carried out after the gamete released induction and fertilization in six concentrations of mercury within the range of 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 and 128 µg/L. Embryos samples were incubated for 30 h in control and test so...
